At Southend News Network, we’ve now had preliminary sales and download figures for our Christmas song Dartford Tolls and we’re sorry to say that the numbers ain’t too good. Actually that’s an understatement. They’re terrible 🙂
Therefore, we have decided to take this opportunity to graciously concede defeat in the race to be Christmas Number One for 2016.
We should say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has downloaded or streamed the clean and dirty versions of the single. Even if we don’t make the charts at all, every (legal) play would have raised money for British Heart Foundation and Shelter.
Funnily enough, there have actually been a lot of positives from this whole experience. First and foremost, the original protest song about the disgrace that is the Dartford Crossing has now been viewed more than 1.2 million times on Facebook and YouTube. If this doesn’t send a massive ‘f**k you’ to the owners and the government then we don’t know what will! Therefore, we will be asking those responsible for their official response to the song shortly.
The fact remains that in 1999, we were promised that the crossings would be FREE OF CHARGE by 2003. Here we are in 2016. Says it all. We will continue to rip the utter piss out of all concerned at every opportunity.
Another positive from this is that our singer Annie Humphrey has achieved exposure that other up and coming singers can only dream of. Remember that snippets of the song have been played on BBC One and ITV for starters, along with the 1.2m+ online plays. On The One Show in particular, Martin Kemp described it as ‘perfect.’
She’s already noticed a huge upturn in bookings for Frog On A Rocket for 2017 on the back of this adventure. If you saw the sheer amount of graft that she puts into singing around her full-time day job you would realise how much she deserves this jump-start to her musical career.
We’re also working on other future musical stuff for Southend News Network together as we have both identified two other major Essex-based ‘takers of piss’ who operate in the same industry. That’s all we are saying for now!
We also need to thank Jon Morter for getting the wheels in motion when it came to getting the song released, and big thanks to Mark Christopher Lee at Nub Music for taking care of all the nitty gritty that got the track onto iTunes, Amazon, Deezer, Spotify and many more. Also, we have to thank Scott and the guys at Ten Green Bottles in Leigh – this was a fantastic venue for the closing scene of the official music video and it was a great night!
We’re off to walk the dogs now and contemplate life. However, not wanting to wallow for too long, our petition to get the Daily Mail reclassified on Facebook as a FAKE NEWS SITE is gaining momentum that our chart campaign could only dream of. More than 3,500 signatures in the space of five days. By the way, GO SATURN 5!
